THE BLACK CASTLE
Dated 1626, The Black Castle is
the oldest dated house in Queensferry. It is thought to have belonged to
William Lowrie and his wife Marion Speddie. The initials WL and MS are carved
in the stone pediments together with 1626. William Lowrie was lost at sea with
his ship, and two local women were accused of causing the sinking by using
witchcraft. Both women were burnt for their 'crimes'
