   THE FORTH ROAD BRIDGE

The demand for ferry services across the Forth at Queensferry was such that a decision to build a road bridge resulted in the opening in 1964 of what was at the time, the longest suspension bridge in Europe. The bridge is now carrying much more traffic than was first forecast, so alternative routes and transport systems are being considered.
