THE HAWES INN
The
Hawes Inn stands at the east end of the promenade, almost under the Forth
Bridge. Its main claim to fame is its association with the novel
‘Kidnapped’ by R.L. Stevenson, but it has been in use for well over two
hundred years, as a changing house for stage coaches, with travellers taking
the ferries north. During the building of the Forth Bridge the Inn gained
another reputation, being a main source of ‘refreshment’ for the many
workers on the bridge, resulting in accidents which may otherwise not have
occurred. The original building was extended during the 18th and 19th
centuries, and is now a restaurant with some guest bedrooms.
