HAWTHORN BANK ROAD REPAIRS
The area behind the High Street at Brewery Close was redeveloped, with two blocks of flats and townhouses being built on the open ground, and replacing the former cinema on the site. Part of the developers 'understanding' was that at the completion of the works he would resurface the roadway at Hawthorn Bank, which was badly broken up by all the heavy construction traffic. Unfortunately the developer became insolvent just as the buildings were completed, but before the road was repaired. The City Council claimed only safety considerations were their concern regarding the road surface. The Community Council pointed out that the City Council had received £698,000 in the sale of the land, and asked that a small part of that sum be spent to repair the road. To their credit, the City Council agreed, and the road was repaired.
